Germany Plans Compulsory Troop Assignments for Lithuania Brigade

(MENAFN) Germany is preparing to assign soldiers to its newly established brigade in Lithuania after voluntary recruitment failed to provide enough personnel, according to the German Defense Ministry.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is expected to introduce the first compulsory postings this autumn, with the measure potentially affecting up to 1,000 troops. Senior members of the parliamentary defense committee were due to receive a briefing on the staffing situation later Monday.

Germany began permanently stationing a brigade in Lithuania last year as part of efforts to strengthen its contribution to NATO and assume a greater role in European security. The formation is being expanded gradually and is planned to eventually consist of around 4,800 soldiers, with full operational capability expected by the end of 2027.

Pistorius had initially sought to fill the brigade entirely through voluntary assignments but acknowledged in June that mandatory placements might become necessary because of recruitment shortages. At the time, he estimated that fewer than 1,000 compulsory postings could be required.

The personnel gap has reportedly been particularly noticeable in several key areas, including information technology, logistics and food services, as well as among enlisted ranks. The staffing difficulties come as Germany continues building the Lithuania-based unit into a permanent part of its broader NATO defense posture on the alliance’s eastern flank.
